Undergraduate students are selected in partnership with five universities: Harvard University, Princeton University, University of California, Berkeley, the University of Southern California, and University of Virginia. They are selected based on academic performance, relevant experience, and an interest in learning about government.

In 2022, 50 Schaeffer Fellows were selected to serve in government and engage as a cohort in professional development.
