Emily Carder
University of Virginia
Internship: U.S. Embassy Mexico City

“I was responsible for aiding the commercial service diplomats at the U.S. embassy in Mexico as they connected American businesses to potential Mexican trade partners. This involved everything from gathering data to making calls to attending client meetings and providing my feedback.

I also conducted an independent research project on Chinese investment in Mexico, which required me to meet with officials across the Department of Commerce and the Department of State. Learning about government innovation was key this summer. I learned how we sponsor innovation from the public sector perspective. Public service abroad is a way of turning inter-cultural connections into tangible economic progress.”

Sanya Khan
University of California, Berkeley
Internship: U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Legislative Affairs

“I coordinated briefings from nine departments in advance of the nomination of the Ambassador to Bahrain and authored 15+ post engagement summaries for senior staff after attending Congressional briefings pertaining to Near Eastern affairs. I also produced biographies on members of Congress tailored to their positioning and voting history on different global issues.

Through this internship, I was able to pursue issue areas I am passionate about and the senior staff was so inclusive and willing to assist me in my future endeavors.”
